I hope you're having a great summer! I've been busy in the studio working on new paintings for a show in December. ✨
You'll be receiving sneak peeks of those paintings soon! But in the meantime, I'm bringing you part two of my brief email series about the stories behind my paintings.
Today's spotlight belongs to a painting that was a breakthrough in my art practice and life, Resilience.
The idea for this painting came about intuitively. It was only after I finished painting it that its meaning became clear to me.
Resilience is all about inner strength. The woman's psychological state is personified in both the nightshade pattern and the angel on her back.
The nightshade flower pattern symbolizes the hardships and trials we face in our lives. The angel tattoo is the woman's inner strength come alive.
I painted this at a time when I was processing not only past trauma, but the change from one way of living to another.
From Puerto Rico to California. From feeling isolated and stuck, to being surrounded by like-minded artists, yet a stranger in a strange land.
All those feelings culminated in this piece. I consider it to be a breakthrough not only in my artistic expression, but in how I think about creating art.
To me, it captures the essence of what it means to be resilient.
