Hi Reader,
I hope that you're having a great summer! New things are brewing in the studio, which I'll be showing you soon.
In the meantime, I thought it would be a good idea to start a brief email series about the stories behind my paintings.
In the spotlight today is my painting Allegory of Rebirth.
The imagery for this painting came from a dream I had before I left Puerto Rico.
I dreamed of a purple/green tornado in the distance. There was chaos all around me, but weirdly enough, I wasn't afraid.
When I woke up, I searched for the dream symbolism of tornadoes. To my surprise, they symbolize change.
My subconscious was preparing me for what was to come.
Soon afterward, I left Puerto Rico, and a month later Hurricane Maria devastated the island.
A week after that, I lost my grandmother.
All of these events happened while I was adjusting to living in California. Which to me, might as well have been an alien planet, it was so different from home.
It took me a while to process all that had happened.
But when I did, it all poured forth onto this painting.
The purple/green vortex of women symbolizes the tornado from my dream.
The two figures in the lower left are a stand-in for the audience and the representation of death.
Death looks upward, acknowledging the vortex that is change: life force.
Overall, the painting is about life persevering in the face of death and change.
